Kentucky Derby & The Mint Julep – A Match Made In Heaven

Well hello again.  I know it’s been a hot minute.  Life is crazy, so what can I do?  Let’s just move on and talk about the upcoming Kentucky Derby!!

The Derby is just around the corner.  What better way to celebrate than to drink the official drink of the Derby – the Mint Julep.

While this cocktail may not be the first thing everyone thinks of when they create Bourbon-based drinks, this one is certainly synonymous with the first Saturday in May, and the race at Churchill Downs.  The Mint Julep has been the official cocktail of the Kentucky Derby since the 1930’s, with it first being offered in it’s signature silver souvenir cups in 1937.  It is an homage to Kentucky’s love of the Derby and bourbon.

The Mint Julep is a refreshing cocktail to drink, it is also extremely easy to make!  All you need is a some mint, simple syrup, and a drinkable, affordable bourbon.  While bourbon is the star of the show, you should not be pulling out your most prized bottle for this.  Nah.  Just get a $30-$40 bottle of bourbon…one that’s great quality, but won’t break the bank…and enjoy!
